Castorius Carvings integrates the cumulative skills of hundreds of years of woodworking development. The most modern computer numeric controlled equipment and state of the art software have been prudently interwoven with the heart, soul and steady hands of woodworking craftsmanship. The result is genuine hand tooled artistry that accurately and efficiently renders the vision of the artist time after time.
The Glory of Old World Craftsmanship is all but extinct in an age of cast resin reproductions. Today's mass production of cheap counterfeits utterly fails to yield the natural beauty that only high grade solid hardwoods can provide when carefully wrought by the heart and hands of a skilled artisan.
The Masters of the past, were always faithful to the ideals and traditions of the art that were handed down to them. However, they never failed to take advantage of the creative possibilities that new tools and techniques could provide them. It is in this spirit that Castorius Carvings continues the tradition, not to replace the craftsman with a machine, not to achieve mass production at the expense of art, but to open new doors to creativity and expression.
We are pleased to offer all of our carvings preserved with environmentally friendly, natural non-toxic tung oil. Tung oil is extracted from the nut of the tung tree and has been used to preserve and protect wood products for centuries. To promote deep oil penetration and accelerated drying our tung oil is blended with citrus solvent. Citrus Solvent is also an environmentally friendly, natural product that is extracted from the peelings of oranges. Unlike many other wood preservatives there are no hazardous or environmentally damaging wastes produced in the application of tung oil. Further, the results are beautiful, long lasting, and have a pleasant odor and feel. The tung oil we use is of the highest quality and is available in two colors, natural and dark. The natural colors the unfinished wood only slightly with a light honey yellow color. The dark renders a brown that is similar to stain colors marketed as "Early American."
To add a soft luster, our carvings are buffed with a high quality paste wax. Paste wax yields a satin finish that best compliments the relief contours of our carvings. Periodic refreshing applications of paste wax is suggested to maintain the desired finish. The frequency of application will vary depending upon your specific environment.
A note on the appearance and color of our carvings. This online store provides photos of our products for your reference and enjoyment. We have done our best to accurately represent the actual products we offer. However, as each piece of wood is completely unique, its resulting color and wood grain figuring will vary from piece to piece. The photos we have provided are photos of actual products we have made but be aware that the brightness, contrast and coloring of the photos will vary from one computer monitor to another. Also, the lighting used in displaying this art on your wall is very important to the overall impact the piece will have on the eye of the viewer. All of this having been said, our commitment to providing you with the highest quality artwork gives us great confidence that you will be delighted with the actual product you receive.
